Loved the point by Joe* of using philosophy in fiction. The story I’m almost done with now is inspired by Machiavelli but could be considered cyberpunk in a way. Loved the show~

Hahaha thanks and it’s Joe. I’m glad you like the idea of philosophy in fiction, I didn’t used to think like this but somehow I got hit by a freight train in my 30s since coming to substack and have changed my way of thinking.

Your story sounds like it’s gonna rock.

Thank you, I got 3k words to my 100k goal. Machiavelli is considered the father of social sciences and has a mixed, but pragmatic reputation. One quote I like saved on my phone is thus:

"If the present be compared with the remote past, it is easily seen that in all cities and in all peoples there are the same desires and the same passions as there always were." ~ Niccolo Machiavelli

Essentially history rhymes or repeats itself.

Great quote, it’s very true.

And 3k of 100k is still fine, keep at it buddy! You’ll make it! I believe in you Koltin!

Ok, a defense you have to learn about is The French Foreign Legion’s defense of Camarón. Only three men survived who surrendered on their own terms. When the opposing general saw them he was so impressed that he exclaimed “These aren’t men, they’re demons!”

Oh ouais, cool! I forgot about the FFL’s defence of Camaron, I read about it and LOVED IT! Damn but they were awesome.

Don’t they still have the FFL leader’s wooden hand in a museum? I can’t remember if it’s in Mexico or France.

I've been thoroughly pleased to have the opportunity to get to know Joe and Dan both over the last year-and-a-half, particularly with our work together on Warrior Wednesday and Sword & Saturday. I knew this was going to be a fantastic conversation. I've listened to you guys quite a few times now, always had a great time with it. I've listened to Joe and Dan, read a lot of their work, and they graciously gave me the opportunity to speak with them on their show twice.

All of this is to say my expectations were clearly quite high for this episode. They've been exceeded. This was superb, probably my favorite episode of the show so far. And I'll fully admit that's because I'm biased and consider Joe a good friend.

Dude, you’re gonna make me cry, geeze man!

I must admit I’ve loved working with you the past almost two years…. and that means we gotta get you on the show again, to talk and hang out.

I’m glad you loved this podcast, I gotta admit it was the most fun I’ve had in years. Talking with Alexandru & Phisto was like being with a pair of university-buddies I’ve not spoken to in awhile and yet have known for years. It was awesome.

As Gandalf said, not all tears are an evil.

We definitely need to make time to talk again. I was actually planning something with Kathrine for Sunday originally, but we had to change plans with my dental surgery coming up on Monday. Getting those wisdom teeth pulled is going to put my speaking ability out of commission for a at least a couple weeks I'm sure. We'll have to see if we can schedule something ahead of time, though. Maybe early-mid June.

Early-Mid June works best for me as well. Ouch though, sorry to hear about the Wisdom Teeth, I had mine pulled out shortly after Covid it was a pain.

Stay strong, and we’ll do a show or two together the next few months!

I'll do so. The pain will be temporary. Plus, The Delinquent Academic gave me a fantastic suggestion for how to make good use of that required suffering. I'm going to do my best to make good use of that recovery time, even though I'll only be getting a couple days away from work for it.

Had a blast listening to this guys. Hats off to everyone. Joe, your wit and sharpness were hilarious; thoroughly enjoyable.

I definitely am like you in thinking that most of the Pagans are LARPing. The European ones, at least. They aren't reading and understanding that, literally, the gods of their ancestors were home made gods of their hands. I mean, this is so foreign and weird to modern minds that someone would think a literal statue handed down, father to son, as head of household - was the household gods. But if you read the Aeneid that's exactly what it was! And if you understand how they set up a head of household over a whole branch of a family, it makes sense that one person would be both priest and king. It's much more akin to modern Muslim way of thought than anything else.

I honestly put it down to the West's long retreat. These men, rather than stay and try and change anything they see wrong in the institutions - would rather just run like women to something that is 'undefiled' in their eyes. Don't want to put in the work. The blood, sweat, and tears to make something beautiful at their parish or Church. Stand up and be a voice, a target, a threat. So run.

There are a few that aren't. I don't think the witches are LARPing. I've had good conversations with Kimberly Steele here on substack, and she honestly sees some of the same demons in charge of the neo-pagan world as I do. Some of those pagans are in touch with the spiritual world, and able to have interesting conversations about how enchanting and beautiful it is, despite how off their foundations are. I had my first 'pagan' conversations with their type, actually, and luckily had positive view points impressed before the negative ones, so I still give the average pagan a chance before writing them off as retards.

Expand full comment
The Brothers Krynn's avatar

Makes sense, my harshness comes from being a former neopagan, and viewing it as the nobler thing we can do is fight for Holy Mother Church. But I see your perspective, I do know a few pagans and am friendly with some online. A lot of them do have interesting perspectives but I’m of the view you’re right about them.

I think that the stories are great and that they can be used to convey Catholic ideals and virtues such as how Tolkien and others did.

That said I’m glad you liked my wit and sharpness, I was trying to keep up with the hosts hahaha. They’re brilliant just as you are.

If ever you want to come on my show though Uncouth I’d love to have you and we can talk more at length about Faith, stories and your thoughts on things.

Guys! Ffs. Winona is mine, as soon as the restraining order expires, so in the meantime it’s me, Uma, and Cameron having a blast on Planet Maher. Hate to bust a couple of bubbles but it is as it is.

The Brothers Krynn is one sharp, funny mf. A great conversation between you all, and the dogs are growing bolder by the week. They want that guest spot.

The topics and issues covered were about stuff that I cannot, in the main, bring up in my everyday life. I feel a little less dumb again. Fukn fantastic show!

Joe, I’ve listened to almost every episode, and this one is one of the best I’ve had the good fortune of being able to hear. Thanks man. I’ve read some of your work in the last year or so, but I’ll be looking into it in more detail now. Take care and God bless the work. Your take on the failure of the great sameness project, that escalated after the collapse of the Soviet Union, was something I have been pondering for the last few years, but could not articulate as well as you did. Solid, sound, common sense. Which has become most uncommon.

One hour and about 29 minutes in, and Joe drops a bomb that I had to rewind and listen to a couple of times, as his summary of what has been off limits to even discuss over the last few decades is that good. Sameness destroyed in a few sentences . Brilliant!
